A Minecraft world is the imaginary landscape that players explore and build in Minecraft, a video game made by Mojang Studios. The game builds it from cube-shaped blocks and counts each block as 1 meter (3.3 feet) across. As of 2026, a world in the game's Java Edition is 59,999,968 blocks wide, about 60,000 kilometers (37,000 miles).

Size

Minecraft measures its world in blocks, and it treats each block as 1 meter on a side. The game's statistics screen, which records how far a player has walked, adds 100 centimeters for every block crossed and shows the totals in meters or kilometers.

A world is square. In the Java Edition, a boundary called the world border stands 29,999,984 blocks from the center in each of the four directions, so the world is 59,999,968 blocks across. The game's code also sets a hard limit 16 blocks beyond the border, at 30 million blocks from the center.

The main part of a world, called the Overworld, is 384 blocks tall from its lowest layer to its highest. The world is divided into areas called chunks, each 16 blocks by 16 blocks, so a world is about 3.75 million chunks across.

Size comparisons

A Minecraft world is about 4.7 times as wide as Earth, which is 12,742 kilometers (7,918 miles) across.
Its surface, about 3.6 billion square kilometers, is about seven times the area of Earth's whole surface, land and ocean together.
Uranus is 50,724 kilometers (31,518 miles) across on average, so a Minecraft world is about 1.2 times as wide as Uranus.
Saturn is 120,536 kilometers (74,898 miles) wide at its equator, about twice the width of a Minecraft world.
Walking straight across a world would cover the distance of about 1,400 marathons, each 42.195 kilometers (26.2 miles) long.

How the edge has moved

The edge of a Minecraft world has moved as the game changed. In versions from 2010 up to Beta 1.7.3, released in July 2011, the game's code ended the world 32 million blocks from the center. That made a world 64 million blocks, or 64,000 kilometers, across.

Beta 1.8, released in September 2011, moved the limit in to 30 million blocks, and it is still there in 2026. The world border was added in Java Edition 1.8, in September 2014. A world today is therefore about 4,000 kilometers (2,500 miles) narrower than a world in those early versions.
