The Horsehead Nebula is a dark cloud of cold gas and dust in the constellation Orion, shaped roughly like a horse's head. It is about 2.6 light-years long, or about 25 trillion kilometers, and lies about 1,300 light-years from Earth. A light-year is the distance light travels in one year, about 9.46 trillion kilometers.

Size

The Horsehead is a pillar of dense gas and dust that juts out from a much larger dark cloud, at the edge of a region of glowing hydrogen gas. It looks dark because it blocks the light of that glowing gas behind it. A 2009 study of star formation in the nebula gives its length as roughly 0.8 parsecs, where a parsec is about 3.26 light-years. That is about 2.6 light-years.

Other studies have measured its parts. The narrow neck that joins the head to the larger cloud is about 0.15–0.30 parsecs wide, or about half a light-year to one light-year. Like any cloud, the Horsehead has no sharp edge, so these sizes are approximate.

The nebula's distance comes from the star that lights it, Sigma Orionis, whose distance has been measured at about 388 parsecs, or about 1,260 light-years. The European Space Agency gives the Horsehead's distance as roughly 1,300 light-years.

Size comparisons

The Horsehead is about four-fifths of a parsec long.
It is about three-fifths of the distance from the Sun to Proxima Centauri, which is about 4.2 light-years.
As seen on the sky, Sigma Orionis lies about 4 parsecs (13 light-years) from the Horsehead, about five times the nebula's length.
If the Sun were shrunk to the size of a basketball, the Horsehead would be about 4,300 kilometers (2,600 miles) long, a little longer than the Moon is wide.

A pillar being worn away

Sigma Orionis is a young system of five stars. Its light picks out the wisps of gas along the Horsehead's top edge, and its radiation is slowly wearing the cloud away. The gas clouds that once surrounded the Horsehead have already been cleared away. The tip of the pillar is a little denser than its surroundings, and it shades the material behind it, which is how the pillar shape formed.

Astronomers call pillars like this "elephant trunks", and they are common at the edges of clouds of glowing gas. They do not last. The Horsehead is expected to survive about five million more years before it breaks apart. In 2024 the James Webb Space Telescope took the sharpest infrared images of it yet, showing fine structure along its lit edge.

A famous target

The Horsehead's shape was first noticed on a photographic plate in the late 1800s. It lies close to Alnitak, the easternmost of the three stars in Orion's Belt, a little to the south. Amateur astronomers use it as a test of skill, because it is one of the harder objects to see through an amateur telescope. In 2000, more than 5,000 people voted online to choose it as a target for the Hubble Space Telescope.
